Making Homemade Cleaners

The other day I had my mom, two sisters and first cousin, Maggie, over to make homemade cleaning supplies. It was kind of like a workshop. Except there was no teacher- we were all learning.

I looked up a few recipes online and I will share them with you. We have all used the products for two weeks now and love the results.

Charity, me, Maggie and Faith. Mom took the photo.

The supplies.

Momma's hands, that create beautiful things.

You can make your cleaners smell as you'd wish.

There are so many essential oil options. The neat thing is that some have natural, germ-killing abilities. Here is a list- cinnamon, eucalyptus, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, lime, orange, peppermint, rosemary and tea tree.

A lot of laundry detergent recipes call for fels naptha soap, but you can use Kirk's Castle, Zote or any natural, cleaning soap. I added two different kinds to mine and it smells divine. The recipe says to use 3 Tbsp. per load and that's what I have been using and our clothes come out clean.

All done and ready for work.

Click on the product for the recipe.

(Mrs. Meyers Copycat Countertop Spray)

Enjoy,
Hope

  1. I love how Zote smells...my mother would hand wash (still does) our clothes with Zote, so the smell reminds me of home!

  2. Love this post! I'm trying to go more to natural cleaners... I use a lot of baking soda and vinegar. I'm making the laundry soap today, but I'm wondering if you uses as much bar soap as this recipe calls for. My bars are only 5.5 oz, not 14 oz bars. ( I was going to ask her the question, but I was having issues with her web page). Thanks!

Oh, and your labels are darling!

    1. For a half recipe I used, one Kirk's Castle - 4oz. and one Fels naptha - 5.5 oz.

It's amazing how you can make homemade cleaners that work!

  4. I am also tickled you posted the laundry soap recipe. A friend of mine and I made liquid laundry soap the other week. I have been disappointed with how it doesn't have a smell even though we used lemongrass oil and Zest soap. I am curious- what scent did you use? I have used Tide for years and love how my clothes smell. I guess I am spoiled! ~Carolyn

  5. Thank you for sharing your resources, Hope! It's great to have cheaper and eco-friendly alternatives to commercial cleaners. I've seen some homemade cleaners that make use of citrus rinds rather than essential oils to help with the scent. Have you tried those?

  6. Hi, Hope! Can you pls let me know the main content of the naptha soap...as I do not get the same material here in India..if you could let me know the content it will be of great help. Thanks.

  7. I have been making laundry soap with my gran for about a year now, I will never go back to a commercial laundry soap. At first I was concerned due to the fact that I have one of those new HE sets and I was convinced by adverts of course that you could ONLY use HE products in them or you would ruin your machine. Thankfully I found out though a friend whose husband works as a repair man of these machines and told me that was NOT true! Not only does making my own product save me money, it also gives me a chance to bond and spend time with my gran. We have been getting essential oils from an online shop called Brambleberry, we have used lavender, honeysuckle, and something called dragon's blood (which actually smells amazing despite it's name), I have had so many comments on how good my clothes smell and I have noticed that they appear to be softer and even cleaner! I am so grateful to you for sharing your other cleaning products, I think that if I have had so much success with the laundry department why not try the others as well! I think I rather enjoy being able to customize my cleaning products to suit my needs, rather than having to buy them from the store and only get to choose what they think I need. Thank you so much and you now have a loyal follower! Bless you!

  8. So, I have a confession to make. I rarely wash my windows. I do, however, have to frequently wipe down my glass front door and bathroom mirrors. There’s something about those commercial blue glass cleaners that makes me feel sick; I mean, literally queasy when I smell them. So, I use this mixture instead: 1 part vinegar, 1 part water and a tiny pinch of cornstarch.

    Best regards.

  9. Thanks for sharing your homemade cleaning recipe, Hope! A lot of people will surely benefit from finding this post. It’s great that you are able to make a safe and effective cleaning agent on your own. At the very least, you could save more, since the materials are cheaper than buying a commercial product. And you can also make small batches, as needed. Cheers!

  12. Homemade cleaners are cool because they help us cut costs. There is often a lot of things to clean in houses, though some of which can be easily done with a vacuum and feather duster. But if you are going to do some deep cleaning, then it wouldn't hurt to have other cleaning solutions that will augment what you have now, and all the work that you've started and have been continuing at this point. Still, thanks for the breakdown of the ingredients. I will keep those in mind. Good day!
